Tritium Water Test
Recommended for targeted testing for tritium isotopes (also known as H-3) in drinking water. The nucleus of a tritium atom has one proton and two neutrons–as compared to the far more common hydrogen isotope (protium) that has no neutrons.
Tritium is radioactive and as it decays into helium-3, it emits beta particles. While tritium does occur naturally in the environment in very low concentrations, it may also enter drinking water supplies due to leaks from nearby commercial nuclear reactors, as well as from government weapons production plants. While these levels are often very low and tightly regulated, ingesting high amounts of tritium can impact human health–as high tritium levels in cells can damage soft tissues and organs.
This Tap Score water test package provides all required materials to properly collect and submit a sample for certified laboratory testing. Reported results will include detailed, quantified analysis of tritium in drinking water.
Tritium Water Test
Is this the right test for you?
What our scientists say:
“ This targeted tritium test is recommended typically only if you already know your water has high beta particle concentration or you suspect tritium contamination–usually related to nearby industrial activity. "
This is the right test if you:
- Have confirmed prior results for elevated gross beta particle radiation.
- Located in an area with potential radiological contamination.
- Live near a nuclear reactor, nuclear waste site, or government weapons production plant.
